Carstensz Pyramid: Oceania's Highest Mountain
Of all of the Seven Summits, Carstensz Pyramid ranks highest in the number of alternative names. The 16,024-foot (4,884-meter) mountain is also called Puncak Jaya, Puncak Jaya Kesuma, and Jaya Kesuma. Indonesians typically vary between the names Carstensz Pyramid and Puncak Jaya.
Besides its multiple names, the mountain has also had a bit of controversy regarding its continent designation, but that is primarily a political rather than geographical dispute. The Dutch ceded control of the area in 1962 to Indonesia, and the area remains politically unstable. Carstensz Pyramid is within the borders of Indonesia, which is on the Asian continent. The mountain is located in the western half of the island of New Guinea, in the Indonesian province of Papua. Most experts consider the island to be part of the Oceania continent, which also includes Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, New Zealand and Australia.
During this 10 days group expedition from/to Jakarta you will climb the Carstensz Pyramid, also known as Puncak Jaya. At 4,884 meters, the Carstensz Pyramid is the highest peak in Oceania, making it one of the famous 7-Summits, the highest peaks of the seven continents. The Carstensz was first climbed in 1962 by the Austrian Heinrich Harrer. And even today, expeditions to this mountainous region of New Guinea require complex approval procedures. Due to his experience and network, Dr. Weiglein is one of the few experts for Papua who can successfully guide and organize expeditions to the Carstensz region. From the wet and muddy jungle to the glaciers of Carstensz mountain, this trekking expedition in Papua is a real challenge for the truly adventurous.
Rising to 4,884 meters, Carstensz Pyramid is the smallest of the Seven Summits but the highest peak in Austral-Oceania. Despite its relatively lower height, it is far from easy. Known locally as “Puncak Jaya,” meaning “Victory Mountain,” it is widely regarded as the most technically demanding of the Seven Summits. The mountain lies on the world’s second-largest island, in Indonesia’s Papua province, surrounded by thick, lush rainforest.
Reaching Base Camp via the overland route requires trekking through dense jungle, often in heavy rain, making rubber boots and strong stamina essential. Even after arriving at Base Camp, the challenge continues with several more hours of climbing, including sections that require fixed ropes. At the summit, climbers are rewarded with stunning views—and in clear weather, it’s even possible to glimpse two oceans at once.
Most flights are at night and arrive in the morning in Timika. Transfer to Hotel and Briefing and Gear Check.
The rest of the day is spend relaxing at the swimming pool.
An early transfer to the airport where we will be “stand-by” for our Helicopter flight to our Base Camp in the
“yellow valley”. Helicopters flights are very weather dependant and only happen when weather allows. This
can go smoothly, but sometimes requires quite some waiting. This is all part of the adventure!
Today we will review some rope techniques, acclimate, rest and enjoy our time in BC.
If weather allows we will leave early in the morning, usually around 5am and walk to the start of the fixed
lines (about 1hr). Maybe we still climb the first pitch(es) in the dark, but it quickly will become light. It will
take approximately 6-8hr to summit and 3-4hr to descent.
Extra Day in case of bad weather, acclimatization problems or other setbacks.

Early morning we will fly back to Timika (if weather allows) and enjoy the luxury of the hotel.
Flight to Jakarta usually depart in the morning. Its possible to extent your trip with a visit to the remote
Baliem valley where we can visit the traditional Papua tribes. If you are an ocean lover Raja Ampat is a must
do destination in Iran Jaya also.
